On Saturday May 3rd 2008, Ravinia Neighbors Association hosted the Highland Park Earth Festival at the Ravinia Train Station and Jens Jensen Park. By bringing the community together to learn more about environmental challenges and solutions, it was hoped that sustainability would be promoted and furthered on a local level. Music, food, storytelling and (people powered!) rickshaw rides added levity to the day as forty-seven exhibitors and roughly a dozen more student groups displayed information, products and services to help area residents learn about greener life style options. Despite cold, wet weather, turnout was good. Approximately 400 people attended the event.
We received many positive comments regarding the festival. In particular, a number of people remarked on the quality and range of exhibitors which included numerous industry leaders throughout the Chicago area. Through February 20th of 2009, links to these exhibitors, and the important information and resources they offer, can be located on the festival website at www.hpearthfestival.org. Additionally, we would like to thank sponsors and partnering organizations for joining us in our endeavor and generously aiding in its success. These groups are also listed at the above address, on the main page.
As we move beyond Earth Day, let us remember how vital our home truly is; the air we breathe, the water we drink, and every single necessity and comfort of life depends on its care. It is hoped that our community will continue to grow in awareness of environmental issues such that we may all live in healthy and sustainable ways upon our precious planet.
